Microsoft ends XP support

Microsoft officially ended support for its Windows XP operating system in Japan on Wednesday. The OS first hit the market in 2001.

More than 50 million machines once ran the popular system in Japan, spanning individuals to companies and municipalities.

With no more security updates, computers running XP are at greater risk of viruses, cyber attacks and exploitation by malware. Microsoft is urging customers to migrate to currently supported operating systems.

A survey shows more than 12 million computers still ran Windows XP in Japan at the end of 2013.
