Ancient cherry tree greets spring

An ancient tree is welcoming spring in western Japan.

Officials announced the start of the cherry blossom season on March 27th in Shimane Prefecture.

A famous, 250-year-old weeping cherry tree is now in full-bloom inside Senjuin temple.

Although heavy snows damaged the tree three years ago, it recovered with the help of a tree surgeon.

The tree started blooming from the middle of March and reached full bloom yesterday (Thursday).

The cherry tree will be lit up for nighttime viewing until the 6th of April.
