Curtains for the Twilight Express

It’s twilight for the Twilight Express.

Japan’s famous sleeper train is ending service next spring.

The Twilight Express launched in 1989.

Connecting Osaka in the west to Sapporo in the north, at about 1,500 kilometers it’s Japan’s longest ride.

The luxury service was popular for its views of the Japan Sea.

But operator JR West said it decided to phase out the Twilight Express because the train cars were aging.

Trainspotters in Japan needn’t despair.

JR is planning a new sleeper service that will tour famous spots in the west of the country.
