Hakodate first city to sue to stop nuclear plant

A city in Japan’s north wants to end the construction of a nearby nuclear plant.

The assembly of Hakodate city okayed plans to sue to halt work on a nuclear plant in nearby Aomori prefecture.

The Oma nuclear plant sits just 23 kilometers across a strait from Hakodate.

The city will sue Japan’s government and the utility building the station to prevent its completion.

Hakodate’s resolution said the city would suffer a devastating blow in the event of an accident.

This is the first time a Japanese municipality has sued to end work on a nuclear power plant.
