No hanky-panky for Tokyo pandas

Giant pandas at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo have made their first public appearance in two weeks, after an unsuccessful attempt at getting them to mate.

Female Shin Shin and male Ri Ri were withdrawn from public view earlier this month as they entered their yearly breeding season.

They were placed in adjacent cages for nearly two weeks, but appeared to show little interest in each other. Their strong appetite for bamboo, however, remains the same.

The couple gave birth to a baby panda in 2012, but it died from pneumonia less than a week later. Last year’s breeding attempt also ended in failure.
