New Year's Message from the President

I wish you all a happy New Year.

In 2016, for the third consecutive year, Nippon Television Network Corporation (Nippon TV) captured the annual viewer ratings Triple Crown title by topping the charts in the All Day, Golden Time, and Prime Time categories. I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude to our many viewers who supported our programs. We will continue striving to provide our viewers with ever better programs in the future.

Japan was affected by a number of earthquakes, floods, and other large-scale natural disasters last year. It was a year that compelled broadcasters to focus not only on providing quick and accurate reporting but also to reconsider the role they play in protecting people from natural disasters.

Indeed, the television landscape saw significant changes. The rapid increase in internet usage and our push to gain approval to broadcast in 4K are but some of the many developments that marked the year. In order to respond flexibly to these changes, we are planting and nurturing new seeds of business.

In December, we joined forces with IIJ to establish JOCDN Inc., which will provide a video streaming platform aimed at supporting Japan's growing video streaming market together with other commercial broadcasters. Our video streaming business has seen solid membership growth, thanks to a range of efforts that include cross-platform initiatives that make our terrestrial TV programs and movies available on Hulu. Meanwhile, the number of videos viewed by those who missed real time broadcasts grew dramatically through services such as the TV portal TVer, an official TV program catch-up service provided by commercial broadcasters in Japan, and Nittele TADA! by Nittele On Demand, an ad-supported service provided by Nippon TV.

In our international business, our award-winning drama Mother was broadcast last October in Turkey. Originally aired by Nippon TV in 2010, Mother was the first Japanese drama to be remade in the country and it quickly became the most-watched program in Turkey. Our pay TV channel GEM also expanded into more areas in Southeast Asia and will continue to grow.

In addition, TIPNESS, a fitness club operator that joined the Nippon TV Group three years ago, celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. With its sights set on the next 30 years, the company will continue to address the changing needs of our customers.

Despite the changing business environment, Nippon TV's core mission remains the same--to maintain our position as the most formidable content creation group. All the companies in the Nippon TV are united in striving to earn your continued support in the year to come.

I ask for your continued support of Nippon TV and all the group companies for this year and beyond.

Sincerely,

Yoshio Okubo
