Japan, US struggle for trade deal ahead of Obama visit

Japanese and U.S. negotiators are making last-ditch efforts at a free trade deal ahead of President Barack Obama’s visit to Japan next week.

Talks on the Trans-Pacific Partnership are bogged down over how far Japan will go in reducing farm tariffs and the U.S. in cutting auto import taxes.

Japanese negotiator Hiroshi Oe said they were focusing on points for discussion and said communication was deepening between the two sides.

Japanese Economy Minister Akira Amari and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman will meet again tomorrow to try to break the deadlock.
