Death row boxer greets supporters

The world’s longest-serving death row inmate greeted supporters ahead of his retrial in Japan on Monday.

Iwao Hakamada, now 78, was jailed in 1966 for killing his boss, the man’s wife and their two children.

Hakamada was freed last month after a DNA test showed blood found on clothing said to be worn by the killer didn’t match Hakamada’s.

The former pro boxer flashed a victory sign to supporters.

Hakamada’s lawyers say he’s been in a hospital after developing dementia in his long years in jail.

Prosecutors appealed the retrial decision, but Hakamada’s defense team is asking the Tokyo High Court to reject the move.
