Exhibition Outline

Fusing Fantasy With Reality

Gifted film production designer Yohei Taneda brings to life the magical, animated world of Studio Ghibli in an exhibition scheduled to open this summer at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
The exhibition will feature a full-sized set based on the animated film, ‘Karigurashi no Arrietty,’ scheduled for release in July. Crafted by award-winning production designer Yohei Taneda, the set will allow exhibition-goers to experience life as seen by the 10-centimeter-tall characters who populate the film.
The exhibition also will feature a retrospective of Taneda’s award-winning production designs, which include work on such films as ‘Kill Bill Vol. 1’ and ‘The Wow-Choten Hotel’.

‘Karigurashi no Arietty & Yohei Taneda’ opens July 17th and runs through October 3rd. It is presented by Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Nippon Television Network Corporation and Team Manmayuto.
Taneda’s design for the 1,200-square-meter set is based on drawings and designs from the film, which tells the story of a family of small people who live secretly under the floorboards of a normal-sized home. Viewers will be able to wander through the family’s living quarters, furnished with over-sized items pilfered from their unsuspecting hosts.
Taneda is one of Japan’s most respected design innovators and has worked with such noted film-makers as Quentin Tarantino and Koki Mitani.
This exhibition presents a rare opportunity for movie fans and exhibition-goers alike. Few film sets are open to the public and sets are almost never created for animated films. The exhibition will provide visitors with a look into how artists, animators and designers work together to create a world of fantasy and delight.
The retrospective will include sketches, models and blueprints from some of Taneda’s most noted work, including the films ‘Kill Bill Vol. 1’, ‘The Wow-Choten Hotel’ ‘Swallowtail Butterfly’ and many others.  The production designer – an artist in his or her own right – is a key player in the film-making process, determining much of the look, feel and mood that appears on film.

Taneda is noted for creating sets and film designs that artfully mix fantasy with reality – a genius that will be on display at ‘Karigurashi no Arrietty & Youhei Taneda.’
