Princess Aiko visits Meiji Jingu, Shinto shrine, for first time

Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, visited Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine, on April 10 to mark the 110th anniversary of the death of Empress Shoken, the consort of Emperor Meiji.

Princess Aiko wore an off-white long dress and a hat and proceeded slowly through the precincts with a fan in her hand.

She bowed toward the main shrine and offered tamagushi, a sprig of the sacred tree.

This is the first time Princess Aiko has visited Meiji Jingu.

Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, Empress Emerita Michiko,Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko visited the shrine yesterday.

Princess Aiko, who joined the Japanese Red Cross Society this month, took the morning off from work.
