Singapore Airlines jet encounters violent turbulence, killing 1 person and injuring about 70

A Singapore Airlines flight from London-to-Singapore carrying 229 passengers and crew hit violent turbulence and made an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvamabhumi Airport on May 21. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said the turbulence, which occurred during meal service, killed a 73-year-old British male passenger and injured about 70 others, including seven of them seriously.

The jetliner may have hit a pocket of clear-air turbulence, which is difficult to detect, according to Reuters and other news agencies. The plane reportedly plunged about 1,800 meters.Singaporean aviation authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
