Aoi festival brings pomp to Kyoto

Ancient scenes of pomp and pageantry greeted visitors to Kyoto, Japan today.

One of the city’s most important traditional festivals kicked off with a parade.

The Aoi festival commemorates a famine about 1,400 years ago.

About 500 participants proceed to a shrine, where they’ll pray for a good harvest.

After yesterday’s midsummer heat, visitors enjoyed the spectacle under cool, rainy skies.
