DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile service provider, launched the country’s first health monitor for dogs.

The small GPS-enabled device, located in a special collar, allows owners to remotely monitor the dog’s sleep, calorie intake, and movement through a smartphone app. It also measures the dog's body temperature and the outside air temperature.

This information can help pet owners and vets recommend a better diet and exercise regimen for the dog.

Various smart health-care devices for humans such as the Fitbit and Nike Fuelband have been developed in recent years. This is the first such device for pets. A separate device for cats is also in the works.
