Workers in Japan’s countryside are burning off fields in preparation for spring.

Tourists turned out to watch them set fire to 18 hectares of grass in Hakone near Tokyo.

The grass is burned to make way for the new shoots of spring.

The resort area is known for its beautiful fields of Japanese silver grass, and the burn has become a seasonal tradition.
