Japanese revolutionary document found

The last letter by a 19th century Japanese revolutionary written just days before his assassination has been found in Tokyo.

Sakamoto Ryoma led the movement to overthrow Japan’s Shoguns, which culminated in the 1868 Meiji Revolution.

Experts believe Sakamoto penned the letter soon before he was assassinated.

It’s a recommendation by Sakamoto for the man to lead the public finances of the new government.

It provides insight into Sakamoto’s vision for a country in which, quote, “a wealthy people means a wealthy state.”

The Meiji Revolution led to the restoration of Japan’s emperor and modernization of the country.

The letter will go on show at the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum in May.
