People in central Japan were treated to an unusual sight today (Wednesday), when four men disguised as mythical lions were suspended from a bridge to perform a sacred ritual.

The ceremony is held every three years. It’s meant to pray for a good harvest, and to drive away epidemics and evil spirits.

The ritual has a history of more than 500 years. It’s designated a significant folk culture asset of Japan.
