Ready, set, spit

People in northern Japan tested how far they could spit a cherry pit at an annual summer contest on Sunday.

The 29th cherry pit-spitting contest took place in Yamagata, an area famous for its cherries. This year’s harvest is already underway.

Nearly 1,000 people descended on the town for the event.

Organizers provided 40 kilos of freshly picked Sato-Nishiki cherries. Competitors attempted to break the record of about 23 meters.

Adults and children from around Japan competed in six different divisions. Some participants got creative, trying to gain distance by forming a human pyramid.

This girl says her longest attempt was 4.4 meters. She said it was harder than she imagined.

This man says he wasn’t able to get the distance he expected. He says his best attempt was no better than the kids.

The record remained safe as this year’s top mark came in at about 19.5 meters.
