Tokyo plans cool 2020 Summer Olympics

When Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Olympics, some said the city’s hot summers would endanger athletes.

Japan’s Environment Minister today presented plans to cool venues and shield competitors from extreme heat.

Nobuteru Ishihara said Tokyo would install mist sprayers to protect athletes and the audience.

The opening ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics will be held on July 24th–the hottest time of year in Tokyo.

To lower temperatures, Tokyo’s marathon course will be made from materials that retain water.

Tokyo is currently suffering through a heat wave, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius predicted for the next week.

Ishihara said the Environment Ministry would outline further cooling measures to handle Tokyo’s heat-island effect.
