Matsutake mushrooms hit the shelves

People in Japan like mushrooms so much, they will sometimes pay astounding prices for them.

The first gourmet matsutake mushrooms of the season reached stores in central Japan today (Tuesday).

The mushrooms sold out immediately, fetching about 200 dollars for just five fungi.

Matsutake, also called pine mushrooms, are prized for their distinct flavor.

They grow only under certain conditions and are difficult to find, making them highly valuable.
