New textbooks state territorial claims

Tensions are rising again over territorial disputes between Japan, China and South Korea.

Japan’s new teaching materials for the first time describe disputed islands as Japanese territory.

The revised textbooks were announced today.

Japan’s government approved 210 textbooks, including all subjects for primary education.

It’s the first time textbooks describe the Senkaku and Takeshima islands as Japan's territory.

Takeshima, called Dokdo by Koreans, is said to be illegally occupied by South Korea.

The Senkakus, called the Diaoyu in China, are described as claimed by China.

Japan’s Education Ministry insists publishers made the changes without pressure.

Japanese kids will start using the textbooks next April.
