A nonpartisan group of Japanese lawmakers are asking their government to reject nuclear power.

The members call themselves the “group for zero nuclear power.”

The 60 members today (Wednesday) demanded the government remove nuclear power from Japan’s basic energy policy.

The group includes members of the governing party.

Lower house representative Taro Kono called on the Abe administration to revise its energy guidelines.

The group wants Japan to get 40 percent of its energy from renewables by 2030.

Japan’s 50 nuclear reactors remain shut down in the wake of the Fukushima meltdown disaster.

But Prime Minister Abe wants to restart them if they pass safety checks.
