Automized passport control by 2020

In the future, visitors to Japan will no longer be greeted by immigration officers.

Instead, Japan’s government is deploying facial recognition technology to speed passport control.

Officials launched a real-world test of the technology today (Monday) at Narita Airport near Tokyo.

The device was first tested in 2012 but implementation was delayed due to a low degree of accuracy.

Japan’s government hopes to have the facial recognition technology in place to deal with a surge of visitors expected for the 2020 Olympics.
