FUJI ERUPTION EMERGENCY LANDING DRILL

video in Japanese

Japan Airlines conducted an emergency water landing drill to prepare crews for a possible eruption of Mount Fuji.

Conducted in conjunction with the Tokyo Fire Department, the drill simulated engine trouble from volcanic ash in the air.

Crews deployed inflatable evacuation slides and life boats in a special pool, simulating an emergency landing in Tokyo Bay. This was the fire department’s first drill at the Japan Airlines training facility.

Widespread rumors and predictions of an imminent eruption have intensified after 2011’s East Japan Earthquake. The last major eruption of Mount Fuji was in 1707.
