Humidifiers cause winter fires: officials

Japanese consumer authorities are warning of the possibility of humidifiers catching fire during the dry winter season.

Officials for Japan’s National Institute of Technology and Evaluation say 184 accidents involving humidifiers and air purifiers were reported in Japan in the last five years.

They say when people move the devices, electrical chords can break and cause fires.

They say children can also be burned by putting their hands on hot steam coming from humidifiers.

The officials issued their warning ahead of February, the month that on average sees the greatest number of accidents.
