Imperial cherry blossom road opened for Emperor’s 80th birthday

People in Tokyo are getting their first look at an imperial secret.

To commemorate the Japanese emperor’s 80th birthday, a cherry blossom street at the Imperial Palace was opened to the public for the first time.

Various cherry blossoms are in full bloom and color the area in different shades of pink.

4500 people lined up at 10AM today (Friday) for the palace gate to open.

Cherry blossoms have a special place in Japanese people’s hearts. Emperors began holding cherry blossom viewing parties in ancient times.

Though the blossoms are already starting to fall, the imperial couple reportedly hopes they’ll last a bit longer.

The road is open until next Tuesday from 10AM to 3PM.
