Inose fined over campaign finance scandal

Former Tokyo governor Naoki Inose has been summarily indicted over a political fund scandal.

The ex-governor was accused of failing to record almost 500,000 dollars in campaign-finance donations.

Inose had said the money from Tokushukai Group, one of Japan’s largest medical corporations, was a loan.

But Tokyo prosecutors said the funds were intended for his campaign and decided to prosecute the former governor for violating election laws.

Inose recently admitted the money was meant for his campaign.

Under the summary indictment the ex-governor, who led Tokyo’s successful bid for the 2020 Olympics, will not appear in court, but will instead pay a roughly 5,000-dollar fine.
