Stem cell scientist appeals fraud finding

A young Japanese scientist at the heart of a scandal over stem cell research is appealing accusations of fraud.

Dr. Haruko Obokata is accused by Japan’s Riken institute of manipulating her study on a new stem cell technique.

Ahead of a news conference, Obokata filed an appeal against the final report issued by Riken's investigative committee.

In a paper published in January, Obokata claimed to have pioneered a fast and cheap new way to create stem cells.

Riken concluded that Obokata fabricated data.

Obokata now insists the errors were made without ill intent and is asking for a reinvestigation.

Obokata also said the selection of the investigative committee was problematic.

Obokata was reportedly admitted to a hospital with mental and physical strain on Tuesday, but she apparently told her lawyer she would go forward with a press conference on Wednesday.
