Supertyphoon Neoguri threatens Japan

Supertyphoon Neoguri is bearing down on Japan.

Weather officials issued a special alert for Miyako island in southern Okinawa Prefecture tonight.

This is the first time Japan has issued a special alert since it was introduced last August.

Hazardous storm surges, heavy rains and gusts of up to 270 kilometers per hour are expected.

Neoguri reaches Japan during the rainy season, possibly worsening the damage.

Rain is already pouring intensely in parts of the country’s southwest.

Some areas have had 370 millimeters in two days.
