Typhoon Nakri brings record rains to Kochi

Typhoon Nakri has claimed a life and brought an evacuation advisory to nearly a half-million people in western Japan.

The season’s 12th typhoon drenched Kochi Prefecture in record rains on Sunday.

Some areas have had more than ten centimeters of rainfall since the start of August.

That’s about three times Kochi’s average rainfall for the entire month.

A 40-year-old man died after being swept away by a river in nearby Tokushima Prefecture.

Almost 80 children are stranded at a campsite in Kochi after surrounding roads collapsed due to the downpour.

Weather officials say Nakri will bring more rain to Japan as it moves slowly up the archipelago.

But in Tokyo, people are dealing with an extreme heat wave, with daytime highs forecast to top 35 degrees Celsius for the next week.
