8-year-old girl, believed to be an Australian, dies in snowmobile crash in Nagano

An 8-year-old girl has been confirmed dead after a snowmobile accident in Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture on February 28th.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m. on the 28th in the Hokujo area. Authorities say a snowmobile driven by an adult woman went up an embankment and overturned.

Emergency crews were called after reports that the child had hit her head and was bleeding.

According to officials, the girl — believed to be an Australian national — was in cardiopulmonary  arrest and was brought to a hospital by a helicopter. She was later pronounced dead.

In January, an Australian woman in her twenties died after a mishap when getting off the ski lift in Tsugaike, Nagano prefecture. She was suspended in mid air and was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Accidents of foreign skiers have been increasing over the years in Japan as travels increase.
