Foreign visitors to Japan hit record 3.4 million for August

The Japan National Tourism Organization said the number of foreign visitors to the country in August totaled 3,428,000.

That was a record high for the month of August and 16.9 percent more than the same month last year.

Japan is a popular destination for the summer holidays, with the weak yen working as one of the contributing factors.

Tourists from 18 countries and territories including South Korea and the United States marked record highs for August.

The numbers of those from Spain and Taiwan were the biggest-ever in a single month, helped by increases in airline seat capacities.

This is the 19th month in a row for the number of foreign tourists in Japan to increase year-on-year.
