Ex-boyfriend fatally stabs female Pokemon store clerk, then himself in Tokyo's Ikebukuro

At about 7:30 p.m. on March 26, a man stabbed a 21-year-old female clerk at a Pokemon Center store inside the Sunshine City building in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district.

Police said the suspect then stabbed himself in the neck, and both were later confirmed dead.

Investigative sources said the two had been in a relationship but broke up in July last year.

In December, the woman consulted Tokyo police, saying her former partner was persistently following her around.

When police escorted her home, the man was waiting for her.

The police subsequently arrested him on suspicion of violating the stalking control law, and he told them he wanted to get back together with his former girlfriend.

At the time, a fruit knife was found in a rental car he was using. He explained to the police that he was contemplating suicide.

In January, a prohibition order based on the stalking control law was issued against the man, and he apparently told authorities that he would no longer approach her.

The police checked in with the woman three times after that, and she told them there were no issues.

The sources said there were at least five stab wounds to the woman's neck, indicating strong intent to kill.

In response to the incident, the Pokemon Center where the woman worked said it will temporarily close.
