ANA and JAL to increase fuel surcharges
International air travel could become more expensive as Japan's two largest airlines raise fuel surcharges once again.
Fuel surcharges charged by All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines on international flights are reviewed every two months based on fluctuations in crude oil prices and foreign exchange rates.
Airlines say rising aircraft fuel costs have been driven by a sharp increase in crude oil prices amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. As a result, fuel surcharges will increase further beginning next month.
On many international routes, the surcharges are expected to reach record-high levels.
For flights to Europe and North America, the surcharge will rise from the current 56,000 yen to 65,000 yen per passenger.
For flights to South Korea, the surcharge will increase from the 6,000-yen range to 7,400 yen.
The higher fees will be collected separately from base airfare and are expected to add to the financial burden on travelers planning overseas trips.
