99-year-old man drives wrong way on expressway, collision in central Japan

A 99-year-old man drove the wrong way inside an expressway tunnel straddling Gifu and Nagano prefectures in central Japan on June 11.

According to police, his car collided head on with another kei minicar at around 1 p.m. in the Ena-san tunnel on the Chuo Expressway.

The male drivers of both vehicles were injured.

S/ Witness / His face was near the steering wheel, his mouth was wide open and he looked like he didn't know what was going on.

The 99-year-old driver entered the expressway from the Nagano side.

After exiting on the Gifu side, he made a U-turn in an area for attaching and detaching chains on car tires and started driving the wrong way.

Police are investigating the case on suspicion of negligent driving causing injury.
