Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Celebrates 50 Years of Dolphin Care

Two beloved dolphins in Okinawa have made history.

Okichan and Muku, Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, have turned 52 and 54 years old respectively.

They live at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

Both dolphins arrived in Okinawa by helicopter from Kagoshima Prefecture in 1975. They've been under human care for 50 years.

This marks a world record for this species.

To celebrate, a special ceremony was held on May 5.

Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny awarded them the Okinawa Prefecture Special Tourism Award.

The local town Motobu also gave them honorary residency certificates.

Then came the highlight—A dolphin show featuring spectacular jumps and splashes.

Families in the crowd cheered with excitement.

Okichan and Muku remain local stars—and global legends in dolphin care.
