Heavy rain lashes Kyushu, 2 typhoons approaching Japan

Heavy rain has been lashing the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan on June 24.

Officials said there are risks of landslides, river flooding and other rain-related disasters.

On the morning of June 24, a linear rain band formed over Kagoshima Prefecture, bringing continuous torrential rain and pushing the 12-hour rainfall total in the city of Satsumasendai past 170 millimeters.

Through June 25, extremely heavy rainfall is expected across a wide area from Kyushu to the Tokai region on the Pacific side of central Japan.

Officials also warned that two typhoons are expected to approach Japan later this week.

Powerful Typhoon Mekkhala is likely to come near Okinawa and the southern islands of Kagoshima Prefecture on June 25 and 26, before approaching western to eastern Japan on the weekend while maintaining storm-zone winds.

Typhoon Higos is projected to approach the Izu Islands and the Kanto region, centered on Tokyo, through June 27.

Authorities are urging everyone to monitor the latest typhoon information and prepare for the storms.
