Pokémon cards worth 10 million yen stolen in overnight card shop heist in Niigata
A trading card shop in the city of Niigata was hit by a theft in June.
S/ Store representative / There was quite a bit of cash in the register, but it was completely untouched. The only thing that was targeted was the cards.
About 5,000 Pokémon cards were stolen from the store overnight. But they weren't just any Pokémon cards.
S/ Store representative / We had multiple cards that were worth around 200,000 yen or 300,000 yen each, and those were among the ones that were taken.
The shop representative said only high-value collectibles featuring popular characters were targeted.
The total loss was estimated at about 10 million yen.
According to the shop, someone broke into the store through a restroom window at around 2:30 a.m. on June 27.
The store's security camera captured the beam of a flashlight moving around as someone ransacked the shop.
A loud noise could also be heard, possibly from something being moved.
The culprit's figure was not caught on camera, suggesting the person might have known where the security cameras were placed.
The shop planned to file a damage report with the police.
