Snow in Tokyo? Warning-level snowfall expected as the cold wave returns over the weekends.
A cold wave is again hitting Japan over the weekends. And there can be snow in the Kanto area as well. Here is the snow forecast.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging caution, warning that “warning-level heavy snowfall” may once again hit areas mainly along the Sea of Japan coast through the weekend.
The peak is expected between February 7 and 8, but from the 6th, an extremely strong cold air mass will flow into the Japanese archipelago, bringing heavy snow and severe blizzards, particularly to regions along the Sea of Japan.
Hokkaido requires special vigilance. On Friday the 6th, winds are expected to intensify significantly, potentially causing whiteout conditions in severe blizzards. People are urged to refrain from non-essential outings.
The Kanto region also needs to be on alert. On Saturday night , the 7th, snow clouds are expected to spread over the plains of Kanto.
In Tokyo’s 23 wards ,central Tokyo, up to 1 centimeter of snow may fall from Saturday evening through Sunday. There is a risk of transportation disruptions and icy roads.
Along the Sea of Japan coast, the expected snowfall from Friday evening to Saturday evening is up to 50 centimeters in Hokkaido. In addition, by Sunday evening, up to 70 centimeters is forecast for the Hokuriku region, raising the risk of another round of warning-level heavy snowfall.
