LDP presidential election to be held on October 4

Motegi Toshimitsu, former LDP Secretary-General / I wish to dedicate everything I have gained through my diverse experiences within the party and government to this nation. I would like to be entrusted with that role.

Former Liberal Democratic Party Secretary-General Motegi Toshimitsu said that they must create a new LDP as politicians mull running for the coming LDP presidential election.

The party no longer holds a majority in both the Upper and Lower House after a crushing defeat in the elections that were held in October 2024 and July 2025.

Hayashi Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary / I intend to thoroughly consult with my colleagues, including those who fought with me last time.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa also indicated he is considering running for the presidential election.

Former economic security minister Kobayashi Takayuki has also indicated that he is considering running for the election.

Other potential candidates include former economic security minister Takaichi Sanae and Agriculture Minister Koizumi Shinjiro.

LDP sources have said that Takaichi, who is popular among the ruling LDP, has an advantage as she received the most votes from party members in last year’s presidential election.

She is expected to make an official announcement on her candidacy this week.

Koizumi told reporters on September 9 that he hopes to think about what he can do to make a unanimous political party.

With Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru announcing his resignation on September 7, the election for the next LDP head is set to be held on October 4.
