Japanese companies sue Trump administration seeking tariff refunds

At least nine Japanese companies have sued the Trump administration seeking refunds of tariffs they paid under the US government’s trade measures on reciprocal trade taxes.

Trading company Toyota Tsusho, imaging and office solutions Ricoh, Sumitomo Chemical and other major entities have filed their lawsuits with the US Court of International Trade.

While the US Supreme Court is currently reviewing the legality of the Trump tariffs, the plaintiffs are demanding full refunds of the tariffs they have paid if the top court declares them unlawful.

In their complaints, the Japanese firms point out that even if the Supreme Court finds the tariffs unlawful, refunds are not guaranteed, suggesting that they took legal action to secure reimbursement.

US warehouse retailer Costco Wholesale has also filed a similar lawsuit.
