Japan deploys long-range counterstrike missiles at Kumamoto base for first time

NNN Reporter: It is just after 10 p.m. outside the Kengun Garrison. With launch systems for long-range missiles expected to be brought in, activists both supporting and opposing the deployment have gathered at the gate, creating a tense atmosphere.

The missile to be deployed at the Kengun Garrison is the domestically deployed upgraded Type-12 surface-to-ship guided missile, with a range of about 1,000 kilometers.

Early on March 9, multiple devices believed to be launch systems were seen being brought into the garrison.

Around the garrison, about 100 people at peak—including members of a citizens ‘group opposing the missile deployment and nearby residents—gathered outside the garrison and staged protest activities.

Yamashita Masahiko, Head of Stop Long-Range Missiles-Kumamoto Citizens’ Association:

We will continue to demand briefing sessions. While our main goal is the removal of the missiles, we will keep fighting and carrying out our activities.

The Japanese government says the missile deployment will be completed by the end of this month.
