Typhoon causes injuries, widespread power outages in Okinawa

Typhoon Bavi wreaked havoc in Okinawa.

The storm made its closest approach to the southwestern Japanese prefecture on July 11.

According to prefectural government officials, there were reports of at least 15 people sustaining injuries.

They included two women walking near the coastal area in the city of Miyakojima where they were swept away by high waves and nearly drowned.

The women suffered scratches all over their bodies.

In the city of Itoman, three people were injured when they were either knocked over by strong winds while riding a two-wheel vehicle or struck by a flying object.

There were also reports of damage, including fallen trees, collapsed utility poles and toppled signs and road markers in various locations.

Power outages also spread across the region, primarily in the Sakishima Islands, affecting a total of over 27,000 households at the peak.

As of the early afternoon on July 13, several hundred households remained without electricity.
