Japan to introduce JESTA entry system for visa-free travelers by March 2029

The Immigration Services Agency said Japan will introduce the JESTA entry system for visa-free travelers during the fiscal year through March 2029 to strengthen its immigration screening of foreign visitors.

The Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization was formulated using the United States' ESTA as a reference.

JESTA will require travelers from visa-exempt countries to provide necessary information online in advance.

The system is expected to help prevent illegal stays, reinforce counterterrorism measures and streamline entry procedures for the increasing number of foreign visitors to Japan.

Justice Minister Suzuki Keisuke said Japan will also strengthen efforts to reduce the persistently large number of illegal residents in the country.

Specific steps include clarifying the criteria for refugee eligibility to enable faster processing of applications and working with the Foreign Ministry to call for measures in countries that have high numbers of nationals subject to deportation from Japan.
