Unlicensed driver arrested after fleeing with police officer on car hood in Osaka
Security camera footage shows two Osaka police officers stopping a white car as it drove through a shopping street on January 7.
The officers were guiding the car when it suddenly accelerated and sped away.
One of the officers jumped onto the hood and struck the windshield with the hand, but the car kept going.
The vehicle traveled about 700 meters before the officer was thrown onto the road, after which the car fled.
The officer sustained minor injuries including a bruised knee.
S/ YTV Reporter / It was right around here that the car drove off with an officer on the hood, made a right turn and left the shopping street.
The shopping street extends in front of Kishiwada Station in Osaka Prefecture.
Vehicles are prohibited from passing through this street from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m.
The officers saw the car traveling on the street during vehicle-restricted hours and instructed it to stop.
On January 8, the police arrested the suspect—a 40-year-old man without a driver’s license—on allegations of attempted murder and obstruction of official duties.
A woman believed to be in her 80s was in the passenger seat at the time of the incident.
After fleeing the scene, the car was caught on another camera moving at a high speed.
The driver reportedly abandoned the car in the city of Kaizuka, adjacent to Kishiwada.
The suspect has admitted to the police that he drove the car knowing the officer was on the hood but denied any intention to kill.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
