A landslide triggered by rain occurred in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on the night of July 17.

Authorities said mud flowed into the first floor of a house in the area, causing the structure to collapse.

Two people were found in the collapsed house and later confirmed dead.

They were a married couple in their 60s who lived there.

Tochigi and neighboring Gunma prefectures experienced record-breaking rainfall from July 17 to 18, leading to a series of damage including flooded roads.

In the city of Ashikaga, the 12-hour rainfall through just after 2 a.m. on July 18 reached a record 232.5 millimeters, an amount exceeding the area’s average monthly precipitation.

The rain caused a road along a river to collapse, possibly swallowed by muddy currents, leaving guardrails and streetlights leaning over.

In Tochigi Prefecture, 40 houses suffered flooding both above and below floor level.

In the city of Ota, Gunma Prefecture, some vehicles were left stranded on roads that had been temporarily flooded.

In Gunma Prefecture as well, flooding was reported in 122 homes above or below floor level.

At a woodworking company in Ota, water rushed into the office and workshop areas.

S/ President of woodworking firm / This company was founded in 1945, and this is the first time we’ve experienced this much flooding. As you can see, we have machinery here, and we still don't know whether the equipment will work. The extent of damage will depend on whether the machines work.
