Takaichi and Trump hold brief talks on Iran, tariffs, and Indo-Pacific security

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke briefly on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on June 16.

The two leaders spoke for about five minutes following a morning session on the situation in Ukraine.

Takaichi expressed Japan's support for the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran.

The Japanese government said the two leaders did not discuss deploying the Self-Defense Forces to the Strait of Hormuz.

They also reaffirmed the importance of steadily implementing the Japan-U.S. tariff agreement, and exchanged views on security in the Indo-Pacific region, including developments involving China.

Takaichi and Trump agreed to maintain close coordination in responding to developments in both the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East.

According to Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Sato Kei,  President Trump appeared to prioritize his conversation with Prime Minister Takaichi despite being approached by several other world leaders.
