Self-proclaimed divine messenger arrested in alleged confinement case
A man who calls himself a "messenger of divine revelations" was arrested in connection with the alleged confinement of a 19-year-old man.
As prosecutors escorted the 46-year-old suspect into custody, he appeared to be smiling. He was arrested on suspicion of unlawful confinement.
Also arrested were a 46-year-old-company executive in Nara Prefecture, his wife, their 23-year-old daughter and their 17-year-old son.
The alleged victim is the family's 19-year-old son.
According to police, the family first became involved with the suspect several years ago when their business began experiencing financial difficulties. Investigators say they sought advice from the suspect, who claimed to be a messenger of divine revelations.
After their business reportedly recovered, the family became increasingly devoted to him. Police say they referred to the suspect as "Master Yu."
According to investigators, the victim later began working at a restaurant associated with the “Master Yu”. The son reportedly told police he had been placed under suspect’s supervision for rehabilitation following his own misconduct.
Police say the young man eventually fled the restaurant and went into hiding in December 2025. However, investigators believe his father located him in Nara Prefecture on May 6 after he had been staying with acquaintances.
The son was then allegedly taken to the home of his sister in Yokohama. Police suspect Master Yu, the victim’s father, and others confined the 19-year-old there between May 6 and May 8.
Investigators say the suspect and his associates surrounded the young man while he was wearing only his underwear.
According to police, they repeatedly pressured the young man to apologize, and that they will find him again if he runs away.
Authorities allege that his wallet and mobile phone were confiscated. They also believe his movements were closely monitored and that he was forced to sleep without clothing.
The confinement reportedly ended when the young man managed to escape after being taken back to Nara Prefecture by his father. Police say he seized an opportunity to flee and seek help.
In a related development, two relatives of the self-claimed divine messenger have also been arrested.
Investigators are now examining whether the suspect exercised psychological control over the family and others involved in the case.
