McDonald's announces new purchase rules for Happy Sets to prevent toy reselling
McDonald's Japan will start offering new toys to go with its Happy Set meals starting September 12.
They include Sanrio characters My Melody and Kuromi and Tomy's Plarail trains.
In August, strange things happened involving Happy Set toys.
S/ Reporter / Some items are sold for over 50,000 yen and some over 100,000 yen.
Some people resold Pokemon trading cards that came with Happy Sets on flea market sites at exorbitant prices.
McDonald's Japan set purchase limits for the meals, but there were people that bought massive amounts and threw the food away.
To prevent something similar from happening with the upcoming toys, the company announced new purchase rules on September 9.
Each group can buy up to three Happy Set meals and will not be allowed to purchase them multiple times.
On the first day of the new toys on September 12, sales will be conducted only face-to-face at stores.
We asked people what they thought.
S/ Mother of 2 / I think they are supposed to make children happy. They're for kids. It's sad that grownups are using them for something else.
S/ College student / As long as flea market sites have become this developed, reselling can be done easily. We need a framework to hand the toys to children.
We met a person who works at McDonald's.
S/ McDonald's store crew member / We make the meals, so when people throw them away, it hurts because we made the effort to make them. The crew are also having a difficult time.
