Private cabin seats to be offered on shinkansen bullet trains between Tokyo and Fukuoka
Private cabin seats will be introduced on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines that run between Tokyo Station and Hakata Station in Fukuoka starting October 1.
Central Japan Railway and West Japan Railway said they will offer Supreme Class seats that are superior to green car seats on some bullet train sets.
Initially, the premium seats in private compartments will be available on about 12 trains a day, with plans for gradual expansion.
Each train set with Supreme Class seats will have two private compartments, one for a single passenger and the other for up to two passengers.
The cost for a single-occupancy room will be 42,100 yen for a one-way trip between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka and 63,620 yen between Tokyo and Hakata, more than double the current respective cost for a green car seat.
Reservation and purchase will be available only through the ticketless Express reservation system and Smart EX service starting September 15.
Tickets will not be sold at stations.
The Supreme Class will also feature a dedicated Wi-Fi environment, while seats will be equipped with speakers designed to minimize sound leakage, allowing passengers to listen to audio without using earphones.
In addition to the fully private rooms, the companies will offer semi-private Supreme Class seats starting sometime between April 2027 and March 2028.
