Fire ball lights up night sky in southwestern Japan
A bright fireball was seen in multiple areas across southwestern Japan on August 19.
The video taken from the Kyushu Expressway at around 11:10PM shows the sky brightening up and a light streaking from top to bottom.
A similar sight was observed in Kumamoto Prefecture.
The fireball was observed in other areas of western Japan as well.
According to Maeda Toshihisa, the director of the Sendai Space Museum of Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture, the light seen was a fireball.
Fireballs emerge when meteors or cosmic dust emit a strong light when entering the atmosphere.
Judging from its brightness and speed, it is likely that the fireball was a large meteorite.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Fukuoka Regional Headquarters, air vibration was also observed at around 11:15PM on August 19 near Sakurajima and the Kirishima Mountains.
